What are Dry Sprinkler Systems?
In the case of dry sprinkler systems, sprinklers are attached to pressurized air containing pipes in a dry pipe system. When the sprinklers are activated by heat, there is a reduction in air pressure. This allows the dry-pipe valves to trip (or open). Water then will be supplied to the sprinklers.
Dry sprinkler systems are installed in many commercial buildings to knock down fire before it can get out of control. Ordinarily, DRY systems are used in conditions where temperatures do not typically remain high enough for the prevention of freezing (40° and under).
If, indeed, heat is only lacking in a few sections of a building, the recommendation is to use a combination of wet and dry sprinkler systems.
Types of Facilities that Require Dry Sprinkler Systems
Though laws and regulations can differ from city to city and state to state, it is generally recommended that a sprinkler system of some kind be installed in the following buildings:
- Manufacturing facilities
- Schools
- Warehouses
- Retail facilities
- Assisted living facilities
- Medical facilities
- Universities
- Multifamily residential buildings
- Commercial buildings
- Hospitals
- … and more!
Benefits of Installing Dry Sprinkler Systems
Dry sprinkler systems have one basic purpose – in spaces where freezing is a distinct possibility, they provide automatic protection against fire.WHILE AVOIDING FROZEN PIPES IN UNHEAYED AREAS. Typically, these types of installations are used mostly within commercial freezers, on outside exposed loading docks, in attics, and some warehouses.
