Which Type Of Fire Alarm System Does Your Business Need?
When it comes to a fire alarm system for businesses, there are two basic types:
- Addressable fire alarm systems
- Commercial fire alarm systems
Shortly, we’ll look at the differences between them. In addition to system types, there are a number of components involved in commercial life safety and fire alarm systems. These can include the following:
- Kitchen hood suppression systems
- Fire extinguishers
- Emergency signage and lighting
- CO2 detectors and smoke detectors
- Fire suppression and sprinkler systems
- Water systems
- Backflow preventers
- Ventilation systems and fire doors
- Alarm systems
- Special hazards systems
By examining the differences between the systems and the components that go along with them, you can better determine what type of fire alarm system is needed for your business.
Addressable Fire Alarm Systems
These are digital systems. An “address” belongs to each device so that the triggered device’s exact location can be easily identified by the fire department. In an isolation module, each device is connected and looped to a control panel. Even if it becomes damaged or disconnected, the alarm will still work.
These work well in larger complexes and buildings, because of the additional features available on this customizable system. Examples would be multi-sited campuses, distribution warehouses, wholesale clubs, and big-box stores. Compared to conventional systems, these do have a higher price point, but they’re less prone to false alarms.
Commercial Fire Alarm Systems
For ages and ages, these kinds of systems have been around. To link initiating devices with a control panel, they use analog signals. Signals are set up in zones and each has its own wire. Upon the triggering of a pull station, a conventional fire alarm system identifies the trigger zone’s general area. Once inside the building, the general area of the fire can be identified to the fire department. In older buildings, this type of system is commonly seen. Examples would be single-story businesses, department stores, and various other buildings with several floors but fewer needed zones.
This type of system is affordable, cost-effective, and reliable. Unfortunately, users may end up with fire department fines and inconvenience due to the system’s tendency toward false alarms.
Determining the System for Your Business
By working with an experienced fire alarm system company, you can best determine your needs where an appropriate commercial fire alarm system is concerned. The system you choose must be able to adequately do the following:
- Activate extinguishing systems/fire sprinklers
- Send information to dispatch emergency responders and the monitoring company
- Alert all occupants simultaneously to evacuate and more
It should take mere seconds for all of this to occur.
