What are Foam Systems?
Foam systems are an alternative or additive to other types of sprinkler systems and are commonly used where special circumstances apply.
A tank stores foam concentrate which, through several different methods, can be introduced to the water from a sprinkler system. The simplest form of storage, a bladder tank, introduces and mixes sprinkler water and foam concentrate through the use of a proportioner. From the tank, the foam concentrate is forcibly introduced to the water around the bladder.
The bladder tank system operation is entirely mechanical and electrical components are not required for its use. Not only can electrical systems start fires, they can fail.
A foam pump is another means of delivery for foam concentrate. From a storage tank, the pump moves foam at the required percent concentration into the sprinkler system. Over a variety of sprinkler system flows, the foam pump system will operate proficiently.
Types of Facilities that Require Foam Systems
There are any number of situations that can benefit from the installation of a sprinkler system. Particularly, however, foam systems are used if there is a liquid fire possibility. Water and foam mix and expand over whatever liquid is burning. The mixture then cools the fire and eventually suffocates it. Foam systems are typically used in the following:
- Warehouses
- Marine Applications
- Manufacturing/LNG Storage
- Jet Engine Test Facilities
- Heliports
- Aircraft Hangars
- Dike Areas
- Refineries
- Processing Areas
- Loading Racks
- Flammable Liquid Storage Facilities
- … and more!

Benefits of Installing Foam Systems
As stated above, if there is a possibility of liquid fire, the best course of action is to have a foam system installed.
But this system is also beneficial for use in the protection of polar solvent fuels and hydrocarbon fuels like ethanol. There are a variety of types of foam systems which include the following: high expansion foam, medium expansion foam, and low expansion foam. Various types of foam blankets will be created from each foam concentrate. These can range from high expansion ratios to low expansion blankets and are used to protect large-volume areas.
